Overseas Institutional Visit (OIV) - Rupali Limachya

Rupali Limachya is on the Psychology Pathway at the University of Birmingham. Rupali recently did an Overseas Institutional Visit to the University of New South Wales and Neuroscience Research Australia.

Joining Professor Kaarin Anstey’s Cognitive Ageing and Resilience lab, Rupali expanded their expertise into critical, unfamiliar domains including cognitive ageing, subjective cognitive decline, and mild cognitive impairment.

The primary aim of the visit was to explore sex differences in white matter hyperintensities (WMH). Working closely with host lab members who pre-processed the extensive MRI dataset, Rupali evaluated measures from the Resilient Minds Brain Health study protocol. This collaborative effort culminated in a comprehensive research proposal and a detailed analysis plan investigating how WMH burden intersects with cognitive decline and biological sex across three distinct patient cohorts.

Attending regular lab meetings exposed Rupali to large-scale, longitudinal observational methodologies that differ from traditional lab-based experiments. A major highlight occurred when presenting original doctoral research on age-related reading differences to host specialists. The research group offered vital feedback and paper recommendations, introducing a fresh perspective that bridges Rupali's ongoing PhD thesis directly with early stages of cognitive impairment
