The Big Ol' Nerdy Charity Symposium (BONCS)
The TIA Centre researchers were out in force last week and participated in a 神马福利影片 Student Union charity symposium held on Campus.
The Big Ol' Nerdy Charity Symposium (BONCS) event is Warwick Student Union鈥檚 NEW flagship charity event where lecturers, PhD students and external speakers come together to give talks on computational cancer research. The symposium was sponsored by Histofy, a spinout from the TIA Centre aimed at accelerated precision diagnostics in both clinical and pharmaceutical workflows and raised funds for Cancer Research UK.
Presenters from the TIA included a mix of research fellows and PhD students covering a range of topics from the field of computational pathology and associated research areas. The TIA contribution to the symposium opened with Behnaz Elhaminia, Research Fellow, presenting 鈥淭he Pathologist's Second Eye: How AI Is Transforming What We See in Cancer Tissue鈥�, exploring the role of AI in cancer diagnostics.
Building on this theme, Adam Shephard, Assistant Professor at the TIA Centre and lead researcher from the Apollo Lab, presented 鈥淎I for Predicting Malignant Transformation in Oral Epithelial Dysplasia鈥�, highlighting AI approaches to disease progression prediction.
Agrima Agarwal, PhD student, then shared her research on 鈥淪kin Cancer Assessment using Terahertz Light鈥�, demonstrating the potential of emerging imaging technologies in cancer assessment. Fellow TIA Centre PhD student Piotri Keller followed with 鈥淲hat Can AI Discover About Colorectal Cancer?鈥�, showcasing AI applications in colorectal cancer research.
The session also featured presentations from Noorul Wahab, 鈥淐an AI Predict Cancer Progression from a Microscopic Image?鈥�, and PhD student, Jiaqi Lv, 鈥淗ow Computational Pathology Supports Cancer Research鈥�, both highlighting the growing impact of computational pathology and AI in advancing cancer research.
As sponsors of the symposium Histofy also delivered a couple of key sessions highlighting the innovative work that they are leading. The first talk was delivered by Adnan Mujahid Khan, Principal AI Architect, which focussed on 鈥淎ccelerating Drug Development with Beagle庐鈥� and the second session focussed on 鈥淎ccelerating Precision Oncology with MitPro庐鈥�, delivered by Mostafa Jahanifar, Senior AI Scientist & Engineer, formerly a Research Fellow at the TIA Centre.
Adam Shephard said of the event 鈥淭his was a fantastic event organised by DCS undergraduate students keen to learn more about cancer research while raising money for a great cause. It was brilliant to see such a range of talks spanning life sciences, computer science and industry, with strong contributions from the TIA Centre. It was also a good opportunity to catch up with some TIA alumni, now at Histofy, who were also presenting. It鈥檚 really encouraging to see students taking the initiative to organise events like this. Well done to the BONCS team!鈥�
