HetSys CDT Brings Hands-On Science to the Community at Science Night 2026
Hosted as part of wider community engagement activities in Coventry, the event gave visitors the opportunity to explore how computational modelling and materials science research can help explain and solve real-world challenges in fun and accessible ways.
Through a series of hands-on activities, attendees explored topics including:
- Annealing in metals – demonstrating how materials can change, strengthen, and respond to different conditions
- Graphene and moiré models – showcasing how tiny atomic-scale structures can produce fascinating patterns and unique material properties
The evening saw strong engagement from young people and families, with visitors asking thoughtful questions, taking part in activities, and learning more about how scientific research connects to the world around them.
The HetSys team was also delighted to welcome and showcase its activities to the Deputy Lord Mayor of Coventry, helping make the event a particularly memorable occasion for students and staff involved.
Outreach events such as Science Night play an important role within the HetSys CDT community by helping inspire future scientists, strengthen public engagement with research, and demonstrate that science is something to explore, question, and enjoy together — both inside and outside the laboratory.
HetSys CDT would like to thank all students, staff, organisers, and community members who contributed to making the evening such a success. Find out more here: /fac/sci/hetsys/outreach/
