HetSys CDT Students Take Part in Storyology Workshop to Strengthen Science Communication Skills

The workshop was designed to support researchers in building stronger narratives around their scientific work, helping students explore how complex research can be communicated in more engaging, accessible, and impactful ways for a range of audiences.

Moving beyond traditional presentation techniques, the session encouraged participants to experiment with advanced storytelling structures, narrative styles, character perspectives, and creative writing approaches to rethink how scientific ideas are presented and discussed.

The training challenged attendees to think more creatively about science communication and explore new ways of connecting audiences with research. By drawing on techniques commonly used in creative writing and storytelling, students were encouraged to develop communication styles capable of making scientific research more memorable, engaging, and relatable.

Workshops such as Storyology form an important part of the wider HetSys CDT training programme, supporting students not only in developing technical expertise, but also in building confidence in public engagement, presentations, interdisciplinary communication, and research impact.

The session provided a valuable opportunity for students to reflect on how they communicate their work and how storytelling can help bridge the gap between complex scientific research and wider audiences.
