HetSys CDT Welcomes Local Primary School Students to Interactive Outreach Event
Throughout the day, students explored a range of topics and activities, including:
- Graphene and moiré patterns – discovering how tiny atomic structures can create fascinating visual effects and material properties
- Virtual Reality demonstrations – stepping into immersive environments to explore how medicines and antibiotics interact with viruses and infections
- Shape-memory metals and annealing – observing how metals can change structure, respond to heat, and even “remember” their original shape
The activities encouraged students to ask questions, experiment with scientific concepts, and think about how research and innovation can help solve real-world challenges.
Events such as these form an important part of the HetSys CDT outreach programme, helping to engage local communities, encourage interest in STEM subjects from an early age, and demonstrate that science can be interactive, creative, and accessible to everyone.
The HetSys CDT team would like to thank all students, staff, schools, and organisers involved in making the event such an enjoyable and successful experience.
