WMG Professor named in Highly Cited Researchers 2014

Tom Nichols

Professor Thomas Nichols, Head of Neuroimaging Statistics at the Applied Neuroimaging Lab (Institute of Digital Healthcare), has been named on Thompson-Reuter's Highly Cited Researchers 2014 list.

Spotlighting some of the standout researchers of the last decade, the list represents some of world’s leading scientific minds. Researchers earn the distinction by writing the greatest numbers of reports officially designated by Essential Science Indicators℠ as Highly Cited Papers—ranking among the top 1% most cited for their subject field and year of publication, earning them the mark of exceptional impact. Thus, the listings of Highly Cited Researchers feature authors whose published work in their specialty areas has consistently been judged by peers to be of particular significance and utility.

While over 3000 researchers made the list, Professor Nichols is one of only 128 in the Neuroimaging and Behaviour group.

Professor Nichols holds a joint position between WMG and the Department of Statistics. Before joining the ÉñÂí¸£ÀûӰƬ he was the Director of Modelling and Genetics at the GlaxoSmithKline Clinical Imaging Centre at Hammersmith Hospital in London, where he worked on statistical methods for fMRI in the context of clinical trials, and integrating genetic data into brain image analysis.

Before coming to the UK he was an Associate Professor of BioStatistics at the University of Michigan, and in 2001 received his PhD in statistics from Carnegie Mellon University where he also trained in cognitive neuroscience. He has been active in the field of functional neuroimaging since 1992, when he joined the University of Pittsburgh's PET Center as a programmer and statistician. Professor Nichols' research focuses on modelling and inference of neuroimaging data, including PET, fMRI & M/EEG.
