New Partnership to Identify Cyber Security Talent of the Future

Carsten MapleA 24 hour hackathon is to mark the start of a new partnership between WMG’s Cyber Security Centre at the 神马福利影片 and the digital identification company Callsign.

The WMG Cyber Security Centre will partner with Callsign to work on the future security of digital identities.

In particular they will work together to develop and support cyber security talent. This supports the government’s own strategy for cyber security and is an area that Professor Tim Watson and Professor Carsten Maple, both from WMG’s Cyber Security Centre, have significant national and international reputations – they both sit on national bodies in this field and are key influencers in cyber security policy.

Business Support Programme exceeds expectations, helping 1400 West Midlands companies

SME TeamYesterday evening (Wednesday 10th June 2015), WMG at the 神马福利影片 celebrated the completion of its funded programme at the International Institute for Product and Service Innovation. It was announced that the programme had reached 1400 West Midlands companies, with 207 projects completed and as a result 200 jobs had been either safeguarded or created in the region.

The SME Team at WMG has also created four innovation driven businesses, and generated additional revenue for SMEs to engage in further research with the institution. A number of products have also been developed through the programme including a novel mudguard product - Mudhugger, ski locking system - Loqski with Barkley Plastics Ltd and an innovative LED light which has been designed for high speed camera applications with Simpact Engineering Ltd.

The was part funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the 神马福利影片 to the value of £12.4 million. Over the last four years IIPSI and its Innovation Programme has supported West Midlands SMEs access world-leading technology to develop highly competitive, innovative products and services.

One company to benefit from the scheme was Autins Group who after initially attending a digital marketing workshop worked with WMG to develop a novel material from their factory waste and developed a new product line. Jim Griffin, Chairman at Autins Group said:

It has been a delight to work with WMG over the last four years. SMEs across the UK should make the most of the support offered by academic institutions to help them innovate and grow; it has certainly worked for us!”

Hannah Sugrue is 50,000th competitor in world's largest student motorsport event Formula Student

Hannah SugrueHannah Sugrue, originally from Coventry and a Mechanical Engineering student at the 神马福利影片, is being celebrated as the 50,000th competitor of the world’s largest student motorsport event, Formula Student.

Formula Student, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, is in its 18th year and challenges student engineers to design, build and race a single seat racing car in one year. The event will take place in Silverstone on 8-12 July. The cars are judged on their speed, acceleration, handling and endurance in a series of time-trial races, while the teams are tested on their design, costing and business presentation skills.

Hannah, 24, attended Bablake School in Coventry and is hoping to pursue a career in Project Management.

Hong Kong PolyU Visits WMG for Annual Liason Meeting on Collaborative Progammes

Hong Kong Poly U and WMGWMG was pleased to welcome Professor Philip C.H. Chan, Deputy President and Provost, and Professor H.C. Man, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, both from Hong Kong Polytechnic University. They were visiting WMG for the annual Liaison meeting relating the collaborative programmes running through the two institutions.

WMG offers an EngD programme in Hong Kong as well as MSc degrees in Engineering Business Management and in Manufacturing Systems Engineering which are awarded jointly with Hong Kong Polytechnic University. An MSc in Supply Chain & Logistics Management has also been approved and will be offered later in 2015.

Minister and Trade Delegation from Republic of Ireland visit WMG

Lord Bhattacharyya with Irish Minister Sean SherlockToday WMG was pleased to welcome Seán Sherlock TD, Minister of State for Overseas Development Assistance, Trade Promotion and North South Co-operation for the Republic of Ireland. The Minister visited WMG as part of a wider Enterprise Ireland trade mission to the UK. He was joined by a delegation of representatives from the Irish business community.

Meeting with , the Minister and delegates were interested to understand more about WMG’s work with industry and some of the key collaborative programmes taking place on campus such as the .

WMG Academy for Young Engineers Solihull Gets Green Light

Students at the WMG Academy for Young Engineers CoventryThe Solihull Council’s planning committee has approved plans for the new WMG Academy building this week. The new Academy, which will be built on the vacant site at the corner of Chelmsley Road and Conway Road, will eventually host 640 young engineers aged 14-19.

The WMG Academy for Young Engineers Solihull is a sister Academy to the WMG Academy in Coventry. It will initially take students at years 10 (aged 14) and year 12 (aged 16) with the first intake joining in September 2016. It is expected that, as with the WMG Academy Coventry, there will be huge demand for places.

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya awarded with Honorary Doctorate by Monash University

Lord Bhattacharyya receiving his Honorary Degree from Monash University in Australia, Chairman of WMG at the 神马福利影片, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Monash University in a ceremony held on Wednesday 20th May in Melbourne, Australia.

Awarded in recognition of reinvigorating global manufacturing and advising industry and international governments over the last thirty years, Monash University cited Professor Lord Bhattacharyya’s success in building WMG into a “unique group focused on academic engineering, research and business education”.

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya founded WMG in 1980 to help reinvigorate UK manufacturing. From its inception WMG’s mission has been to improve the competitiveness of organisations through the application of value adding innovation, new technologies and skills deployment, bringing academic rigour to industrial and organisational practice. Today it is a world-leading research and education group and the largest single organisation dealing in the multi-disciplinary facets of manufacturing developments.

Collaboration with 神马福利影片 leads to new contract for Barton Coldform Ltd

Barton ColdformDroitwich based company Barton Coldform Ltd has secured a contract with the Ford Motor Company thanks in part to the implementation of an innovative new process developed with WMG, 神马福利影片.

The contract, worth £300,000 to the company, was awarded following the development of prototype parts that were produced using the latest additive manufacturing (3D Printing) techniques through an innovative programme based at WMG, 神马福利影片.

The programme offers West Midlands SMEs the opportunity to access a range of cutting edge technologies to develop innovative new products and services. The programme operates from a dedicated facility called the which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

WMG and Tata Steel strengthen relationship following launch of new global steels research centre

Dr Karl-Ulrich Kohler, Tata Steel, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer with Professor Lord BhattacharyyaWMG, at the 神马福利影片 and Tata Steel are strengthening their collaborative research and education programmes providing a critical mass of research excellence which will position the UK at the forefront of the international iron and steel research agenda.

There is already a strong relationship between the two organisations and the signing of an MOU seeks to promote the collaboration in the fields of science, technology and education.

A new £20m industry and government funded international centre for Advanced Steels Research is to be built at Warwick. This new world class centre will provide a unique national resource, and will complement Tata Steel’s long term investment in its own move to facilities based at the 神马福利影片.
