Ratan Tata & Cyrus Mistry unveil Foundation Stone of £150 million National Automotive Innovation Centre

Unveiling of the NAIC Foundation StoneOn Tuesday 17th March, Mr Ratan N. Tata (Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons), Cyrus P. Mistry (Chairman of Tata Group) met with Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya the Chairman and Founder of WMG at the 神马福利影片 and unveiled the foundation stone of the new £150 million National Automotive Innovation Centre on the campus of the 神马福利影片.

The will be the largest automotive research centre of its kind in Europe. Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Motors, and WMG have made an investment of £150m in the capital building and research activities, with £30m capital costs funded by the Government's Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). The 33,000m2 complex will provide space for 1,000 engineers, designers and academics to work together, from apprentices to senior managers. Teaching facilities will support the education of tomorrow’s engineers with the Centre being open to students from the WMG Academies for Young Engineers to work on real world applications.

NAIC Foundation StoneThe high tech research facilities will include: a design and simulation space creating innovative automotive solutions: an Advanced Propulsion Research Laboratory which will address the national requirement to position the UK as the leading innovator in advanced propulsion systems; the world’s most adaptable and advanced fully immersive drive-in car simulator. There will be close working on collaborative research projects with the research councils and the department of Business Innovation and Skills. Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Motors will also use the NAIC to take forward autonomous vehicles research through a £19m Autodrive UK project.

Strategic Partnership between WMG and Thermotec Plastics Leads to New Client Offering Worth £1.5 Million

ThermoteccBirmingham based and WMG at the 神马福利影片 have worked on a project together to develop a new product offering for the automotive and aerospace markets that is worth £1.5 million in new turnover for the business.

Thermotec Plastics, an innovative and bespoke supplier of engineered solutions in vacuum forming and polyurethane mouldings created a new composite material with impressive lightweight properties and WMG undertook a testing programme that validated the product for market.

The collaboration developed when David Rose, managing director of Thermotec was asked for performance related data for the new composite material by a key automotive client. Thermotec was unable to produce the data in-house as the testing equipment required was investment prohibitive. He therefore approached WMG’s SME Team at the who were able to undertake the testing through their funded Innovation Programme for West Midlands SMEs.

WMG's Institute of Digital Healthcare welcomes Liz Kendall MP

Liz Kendall MP visits IDHWMG was pleased to welcome Liz Kendall MP, the Labour Party Shadow Minister for Care and Older People as she visited WMG's on Monday 9th March, 2015.

Meeting with Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, Ms Kendall heard about the research undertaken by IDH to force healthcare innovation, including how researchers are working with partners in the West Midlands NHS to translate academic innovation into improved healthcare outcomes in fields as varied as cancer and obesity and how partnerships with the NHS and cross-disciplinary innovators can improve treatments and waiting times.

As well as visiting WMG's Digital Laboratory, Ms Kendall met with , Chair in e-Health Innovation and IDH's Head of Research, Professor Meghana Pandit, Chief Medical Officer, University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire and , Professor of Digital Healthcare. They discussed how IDH research projects were delivering change for local patients and the potential applications of new digital technologies in the prevention and treatment of illness.

WMG and BAE Systems Partner on Cyber Security and Management Programme in Malaysia

MoU Signing March 2015WMG, at the 神马福利影片, and BAE Systems have signed a memorandum of understanding for the delivery a new post-graduate programme in Cyber Security.

The programme has been developed in cooperation with and Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) to offer a three-year MSc in Cyber Security and Management. Both universities formally agreed to the programme during a signing ceremony at the House of Lords in London.

The extensive programme will offer ten specifically designed Cyber Security and Management modules delivered at UPNM each year of the programme. Up to a total of 72 students will study the programme over three years.

The partnership with BAE Systems also extends through to research with BAE’s Applied Intelligence.

WMG welcomes Professor Alex Halliday of The Royal Society

John Leighfield, Professor Lord Bhattacharyya and Alex HallidayWe were very pleased to welcome to WMG, Professor Alex Halliday FRS, Head of Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences at the University of Oxford.

Professor Halliday, who is Physical Secretary and Vice President of The Royal Society, met with Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya FRS and John Leighfield, previously Chairman of Council at Warwick and currently Chair of the Governing Body of the . They enjoyed a wide ranging discussion on the opportunities in research and education.
 
The discussion was followed by a visit to WMG’s research laboratories, including presentations on WMG's work within the areas of and .

flyerThe 2nd annual WMG Doctoral Research and Innovation Conference, entitled ‘Innovation through Collaboration’, is an excellent opportunity to showcase research from both academia and industry across themes in design, materials, manufacturing, systems and business transformation.

Organised by doctoral students, the conference will be held in the International Digital Laboratory on 30th June - 1st July, with an evening social event on the 30th.

Papers and poster presentations will take place across a wide variety of topics and awards will be presented in each theme.

Abstracts should be submitted online by 31st March.

Coventry pupils to mark 10 day week with 3D printing at Herbert Art Gallery & Museum

3D PrintingBritish Science Week is three days longer than a normal week (13-22nd March) and Coventry school children will be making use of the 3 extra days in that “week” with a special 3D printing and engineering event led by the 神马福利影片 at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum in Coventry on Saturday 21st of March from 10am to 4pm.

Working with Diane Burton, (Project Officer for the CAD and 3D Printing Project at WMG at the 神马福利影片), the young people from Stoke Park and Cardinal Wiseman schools will be exhibiting their work using the technology of 3D printing. There will also be an opportunity for visitors to try the technology for themselves.

Alongside those 3D printed products, the 神马福利影片’s Engineering students will be exhibiting a created for an international student submarine competition and the latest version of a rescue robot designed for an international student competition to create a robot to search disaster scenes and locate survivors

Indian High Commissioner to the UK visits WMG

Indian High Commissioner, Mr Ranjan Mathai with Professor Lord BhattacharyyaWMG was pleased to welcome Mr Ranjan Mathai, Indian High Commissioner to the UK, to visit WMG on Thursday 19th February.

Meeting with Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, Mr Mathai was interested to understand the breadth of research undertaken by WMG, how the Group develops partnerships with industry and the significant economic benefits of such partnerships.

Mr Mathai also took a tour of WMG’s facilities including the new , as well as viewing materials and manufacturing research activity in the International Manufacturing Centre and visiting the International Institute for Nanocomposites Manufacturing.

Tom Lockhart recognised at Coventry Apprentice of the Year Awards

Tom Lockhart with Colin Harrison, Professor Lord Bhattacharyya and Cllr Hazel Noonan Tom Lockhart, HR Administrative Assistant at WMG, has been recognised as a finalist in the for 2014. Tom was one of six finalists who were selected for exceptional ability shown in their chosen apprenticeship and whose achievements can inspire others towards considering the opportunities available through undertaking apprenticeships.

Tom and the other finalists were invited to the Apprentice of the Year Awards dinner held in St. Mary’s Guildhall in January. Awards were presented by the Lord Mayor, Cllr Hazel Noonan and Guild Master, Colin Harris.

WMG Chairman, also attended the ceremony as the invited guest speaker to mark the 10th anniversary of the awards. In his speech to the finalists and guests, he stressed the importance of encouraging apprenticeships and pointed to his own early career experience, as a graduate apprentice for Lucas Industries, to show how the lessons learned had forged his career.
