Professor Christine Schwöbel-Patel was hosted by the Arctic Institute at the University of Akureyri, Iceland

In mid-May, Professor Christine Schwöbel-Patel was a visiting researcher at the Stefansson Arctic Institute at the University of Akureyri, Iceland. She was there on the invitation of the Nansen Professor of Polar Studies, Dr Romain Chouffart. The visit was to enable a collaboration between Professor Schwöbel-Patel and Dr Chouffart on Arctic governance and new modes of sovereignty through infrastructure. They build on a mutual interest in the legal effects of infrastructure projects as modes of sovereignty in Greenland and beyond.

The research aims to make sense of the rivalries over Greenland through infrastructural expansion, their legal effects, and effects on Indigenous life. Bringing together expertise in polar law and international law will help to show the dynamics at play in rivalries over Arctic governance.

Professor Schwöbel-Patel shared:

“My research visit at the Arctic Institute was a fantastic opportunity to build a fruitful collaboration on Arctic governance with one of the most respected scholars in polar law. I also managed to fit in a whale-watching trip (where I spotted three humpback whales!) and a trip to a majestic waterfall.”
