Call for Abstracts - ‘Pluralism and Social Justice in the Context of Ethnic Nationalism’
We are excited to invite you to participate in a one-day seminar on ‘Pluralism and Social Justice in the Context of Ethnic Nationalism’, supported by the ‘Big Questions’ funding from Social Sciences Connect at the ÉñÂí¸£ÀûӰƬ. This event aims to foster collaborations and establish a new interdisciplinary research network around these issues at Warwick.
The rise of ethnic nationalism and authoritarian politics across diverse global contexts has reshaped political life, public discourse, and institutional arrangements. This trend has significantly shaped policies, community life, and socio-political arrangements at both national and global levels. At the same time, it has contributed to the emergence of new forms of resistance and protest, raising important questions about social justice in diverse contexts. It has also prompted scholars to revisit key debates on pluralism and social justice - issues that cut across disciplinary boundaries.
We propose a one-day seminar to explore the challenges that pluralism faces in the context of ethnic nationalism and authoritarianism, as well as the plural forms of resistance that have emerged in response. The event will also consider the future of pluralism and social justice, particularly from perspectives within the humanities and social sciences. The seminar will provide a platform for participants to deliver a 15-minute presentation sharing their research related to Pluralism and Social Justice. The aim is not to require extensive preparation but rather to create an opportunity for colleagues at all career stages to connect, exchange ideas, and explore potential collaborations across diverse research agendas. Some questions that may guide your contribution are:
Does the concept of pluralism offer an adequate framework for advancing social justice and equality in the 21st century, particularly in the context of the rise of ethnic nationalism?
What is the future of social justice in plural societies in light of the resurgence of ethnic nationalism?
How have marginalised communities and activists resisted and navigated the challenges of ethnic nationalism in different contexts?
How are forms of resistance and dissent articulated within and against nationalist projects?
How are political identities, belonging, and exclusion constructed through narrative, visual, and cultural practices?
How do these developments shape the possibilities and limitations of conducting critical research in such contexts, and what methodological and ethical challenges arise when conducting critical research in contexts shaped by nationalism and authoritarianism?
