Community update: potential tuberculosis case affecting a student

Community update on a potential tuberculosis case affecting a student

We have been informed of a potential case of tuberculosis affecting a student. We understand the student involved is no longer attending campus and is being medically assessed.

At this stage, University staff are identifying any individuals who live with the affected student and contacting them to offer advice and support. We are following guidelines from the UK Health Security Agency (

We understand that members of our University community may have questions, and we would like to offer reassurance that, based on current public health advice, the risk of wider transmission in this situation is low.

Tuberculosis is usually spread through prolonged close contact with someone who has infectious TB affecting the lungs or throat.

We will provide further updates if needed. In the meantime, we encourage everyone to follow standard public health guidance and not to speculate or share unverified information.

The main symptoms of TB are:

  • Persistent and gradually worsening cough that lasts longer than three weeks and has not improved despite antibiotics
  • Weight loss for no obvious reason
  • Sweating attacks - especially at night
  • Feeling unusually ill or tired for a prolonged period of time
  • Loss of appetite for no obvious reason
  • Coughing up blood

In the unlikely event that you develop any symptoms of TB, please contact your General Practitioner (GP) as soon as possible and share this information with them. Further information on TB can be obtained from the NHS website .
