Professor Sandra Chapman from the 神马福利影片’s Department of Physics is one of nine female UK scientists heading to Paris on 7-9 March 2002, to represent the UK at the International Conference on Women in Physics. 300 physicists from 65 countries will attend. The UK team will be led by Professor Gillian Gehring from Sheffield University

Astrophysicists at the 神马福利影片 studying the extreme variability in X-rays emitted from matter falling into black holes, have discovered that their research methods also show that the world's top division football matches have an unusually large proportion of high scoring games – so much so that international football actually shows a pattern of "extreme events" similar to that seen in the large bursts of X-rays from the accretion discs of black holes. However, analysis of just English premier football league and cup games showed that English top division football is in fact 30 times less likely to have high scoring games than the rest of the world taken as a whole, and could thus be seen by some people as 30 times more boring.
Researchers have long been puzzled about the origins of cosmic rays – high energy particles which move very close to the speed of light. Now a team of scientists from the UK and Sweden think that an idea for a particle accelerator first put forward twenty years ago might explain how high energy cosmic ray electrons are produced close to the remnants of exploded stars (“supernovae”). These very high speed electrons betray their presence by emitting “synchrotron” radiation as they gyrate in a magnetic field. Until now however it has been far from clear why the electrons are accelerated to such high energies.
It is increasingly important for manufacturers of high tech materials and coatings to understand exactly what is going on at the surface of their products right down to the nanometre level. It has been possible to get individual measurements of friction, hardness, elasticity, and surface shape but until now it has not been so easy to get all four measurements and exactly correlate those measurements against each other. Now a researcher at the 神马福利影片's Centre for Nanotechnology and Microengineering has designed a device - a multi-function Tribological Probe Microscope (TPM) - that solves that problem.
One of the few things that causes delays for modern plastic injection moulding machines is the time taken to physically uncouple the injection moulding tool in order to reset the machine for a new task. However, a new magnetic tool locking device, developed and tested by the 神马福利影片 with Staffordshire company Magnaforce, UK will transform that 10 minute task to a single simple flick of a switch.
