Safeguarding – Precautionary Actions
Wellbeing and Safeguarding Service seeks to keep students safe whilst they are studying, and living at the University.
Where we are concerned about a student鈥檚 ability to keep themselves safe, or we have concerns about possible harm to others, we may need to take actions to safeguard students or the wider community. There is an acknowledgment that for the vast majority of students the standard Warwick processes around the misconduct processLink opens in a new window or external referrals to appropriate outside agencies (Police, Social Services, MARAC etc) may be best placed to deal with issues where students are experiencing difficulties.
On occasion immediate action may need to be taken, without a student (or staff member) reporting an issue and/or raising a concern. There may also occasions where a student or staff member has reported an incident, but they have done so out of office hours (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm), and issues have escalated, to such an extent that swift and proportionate action needs to be taken to safeguard people during the out-of-hours period.
In these instances, the University deems it appropriate to take steps to safeguard a student, or others,in accordance with our Safeguarding policy (Safeguarding Policy | Wellbeing and Student SupportLink opens in a new window).
If we need to take actions to support students or staff, this may include (but is not limited to):
1. On-campus accommodation room moves, if students sharing an accommodation present a risk to one another, and there are factors which may indicate that they are unable to protect themselves from abuse, harm or exploitation.
2. Being excluded from any part of the University or the University as a whole, where there is an immediate risk to the student, or other members of the University, it may be appropriate for students to remain off campus for a period of time.
3. Alternatively, it could be proportionate to restrict access through reserving the right to stop an ID card/room fob.
Most Safeguarding Precautionary Actions are time limited, but this will be taken on a case-by-case basis. If students would like the team to review any Safeguarding Precautionary Action, then they can contact the safeguarding team, who will discuss the process in further detail with them (safeguarding@warwick.ac.uk).
