For centuries, attention has focused on the hospital’s founder, Robert Dudley, and his heirs, the Sidney family. This exhibition shifts the spotlight away from these well-known figures to the brethren themselves, asking who they were, how they were chosen and what daily life at the hospital was like.

Despite the later reputation of the Lord Leycester as a home for ex-servicemen, this exhibition shows that the Lord Leycester was home to a remarkably diverse group of people. Through their stories, we see complex webs of power that connected monarchs to their subjects, how patronage operated within major aristocratic households, and how ordinary people lived nearly four hundred years ago.
Arts Faculty News Tue, 19 May 2026 13:28:52 GMT 8ac672c49e390bec019e406ccad143ef Empire’s Fruit: Colonial Ecologies, Food Systems, and Imperial Power - Call For Papers /fac/arts/hrc/confs/fruit/ Call For Papers Tue, 12 May 2026 13:41:26 GMT 8ac672c59e1a2566019e1c6bc8263f42 Working with Publishers - a one-day workshop for PGRs and ECRs - Registration now open /fac/arts/hrc/events/wp/ Humanities Research Centre News Wed, 29 Apr 2026 07:00:00 GMT 8ac672c69dcce470019dd4c034ab1d59 The Future of Publishing in the Humanities - one-day symposium - Registration now open /fac/arts/hrc/events/futurepub26/ Conference Information Tue, 28 Apr 2026 15:38:11 GMT 8ac672c49dcce476019dd4bda45e1480 Humanities Research Fund (HRF) - Funding Call /fac/arts/hrc/events/news/?newsItem=8ac672c79dadffcb019dcf5ffca82d3e
The Humanities Research Fund (HRF) is now accepting out-of-cycle applications for activities to be carried out between 1 December 2025 - 31 July 2026.

These will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
