His work focusses on the history of imperial and postimperial Japanophone cinema. His present research explores the contested model of “the witness” in contemporary documentary arts practices and theories in East Asia.</p> <p>Dr. Ogawa’s expertise spans three interrelated fields of inquiry: (a.) archival film history; (b.) Japanese cinema with an emphasis on postcolonial filmmaking; and (c.) imperial/post-imperial documentary cinema. Between 2012 and 2024 he directed the interdisciplinary research centre (SFB) <em>Heroes &ndash; Heroizations &ndash; Heroims from Antiquity to Today</em> at the University of Freiburg, which more deeply rooted his interest in potentials of interdisciplinary research and in dialogues beyond disciplinary borders.</p> <p>Philipp Höfele is a postdoctoral research fellow within the framework of the “Young Academy for Sustainability Research” (YAS) at FRIAS since 2024.
