Film and Television Studies is delighted to be co-hosting Dr. Shota Ogawa, a cutting-edge film scholar in the documentary arts in East Asia.

Dr. Ogawa is an Associate Professor in Screen Studies (Graduate School of Humanities) at Nagoya University, Japan. His work focusses on the history of imperial and postimperial Japanophone cinema. His present research explores the contested model of “the witness” in contemporary documentary arts practices and theories in East Asia.

Dr. Ogawa’s expertise spans three interrelated fields of inquiry: (a.) archival film history; (b.) Japanese cinema with an emphasis on postcolonial filmmaking; and (c.) imperial/post-imperial documentary cinema. His current research draws on these three areas to examine the contested figure of the witness in contemporary documentary arts in East Asia, with special attention to practices that destabilize the androcentric “testimony apparatus” (Bhaskar and Sarkar 2010) in favour of its recalibration around the archival, the nonhuman, and the forensic witness.

Ogawa’s investment in cinematic documentation and interdisciplinary coverage of human rights trials and social activism will be of special interest to those invested in how global documentary practice can contribute to contemporary interdisciplinary debate on who and what should count as a witness, and how this witnessing matters to the social and political challenges of the world today.

Ege’de Atölye, a modern liberal arts initiative on the Aegean, invites participants to an engaging conversation exploring interdisciplinary learning, community-based research, and cultural practice through science and the humanities.

Led by Dr. Zeynep Delen Nircan, the session will offer a historical interpretation of the liberal arts from the perspective of a Turkish chemist, reflecting on how scientific inquiry can intersect with culture, ecology, and community engagement.

The event will introduce the Olive Project, highlighting its development, outcomes, and broader impacts, alongside Community Fungi, a parallel initiative applying similar collaborative approaches in a different local context. Together, these projects demonstrate how place-based learning and research can foster meaningful connections between science, society, and the environment.

The session will conclude with an invitation to further discussion and potential collaborations, followed by an Olive Oil Tasting Workshop offering participants a sensory exploration connected to the themes of the talk.

Dr. Nircan is also the coauthor of The Chemical Story of Olive Oil: From Grove to Table (Royal Society of Chemistry).

We are inviting researchers and gender-diverse community members to take part in a one-day exploratory workshop: “Becoming Visible: Representing the Trans Past On Screen”.

Date: 26 June 2026

Location: Institute of Advanced Study Seminar Room, ��ӰƬ

This workshop will bring together academic researchers and trans community members to explore trans representation in Weimar-era film and visual culture.

Participants will:

Engage in discussions about archival and lost films.
Take part in creative exercises such as storyboarding and critical fabulation to explore historical materials.
Collaborate with trans community members to inform research methodologies and contribute to inclusive scholarship.

Who can participate

Researchers with an interest in film studies, visual culture, queer and trans histories, or related fields.
Trans or gender-diverse people who are interested in sharing their lived experience and contributing to research and creative discussions.

Benefits of participation

Contribute your expertise or lived experience to an interdisciplinary research project.
Collaborate across academic and community perspectives to shape future research directions.
Participate in creative methods that complement academic approaches.

Time commitment: One full day (Friday 26th June 2026)

Biographies:

Balázs Trencsényi is a Professor at the History Department of Central European University, Director of the CEU Institute for Advanced Study in Budapest and co-director of Pasts, Inc. Center for Historical Studies. His main field of interest is the history of modern political thought in East Central Europe. Between 2008 and 2013, he was Principal Investigator of the European Research Council project, “Negotiating Modernity”: History of Modern Political Thought in East Central Europe. He has held fellowships at Centre Marc Bloch, the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, Imre Kertész Kolleg, Jena, the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia, and IWM Vienna. He is one of the founders of the Invisible University for Ukraine, CEU's certificate program for Ukrainian students launched in 2022. Among others, he is the author of The Politics of ‘National Character’: A Study in Interwar East European Thought (Routledge, 2012), and Intellectuals and the Crisis of Politics in the Interwar Period and Beyond (OUP, 2025); co-author of A History of Modern Political Thought in East Central Europe, vols. I-II (OUP, 2016-8); co-editor of Discourses of Collective Identity in Central and Southeast Europe (1775–1945), vols. I–IV (CEU Press, 2006–14); European Regions and Boundaries: A Conceptual History (Berghahn, 2017); and Brave New Hungary: Mapping the "System of National Cooperation” (Rowman and Littlefield, 2019).

Biographies:

Ralf von den Hoff has been directing the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) since 2022. As a professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Freiburg his research focuses on visual culture studies of ancient Greece and the Roman empire. He was a senior fellow at FRIAS in 2012/13 and at the Morphomata Center for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at Cologne University in 2018/19 and 2020. Between 2012 and 2024 he directed the interdisciplinary research centre (SFB) Heroes – Heroizations – Heroims from Antiquity to Today at the University of Freiburg, which more deeply rooted his interest in potentials of interdisciplinary research and in dialogues beyond disciplinary borders.

Philipp Höfele is a postdoctoral research fellow within the framework of the “Young Academy for Sustainability Research” (YAS) at FRIAS since 2024. Previously, he was a postdoctoral researcher within the livMatS Cluster of Excellence in Freiburg (2019–2021) and a DAAD PRIME Fellow at Freie Universität Berlin and Pennsylvania State University (2021–2023). His main areas of research are practical philosophy and ethics, with a historical focus on the 19th and 20th centuries and a systematic focus on environmental philosophy, technology ethics, and the Anthropocene discourse.

Biographies:

Malene Friis Hansen is an interdisciplinary scholar and practitioner studying human–other-primate interfaces in Indonesia and Malaysia through methods from Ethology, Ecology, and Ethnography. Since September 2025, she has been a Post doc and an AIAS-AUFF Fellow at the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies, Aarhus University. She holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Copenhagen, and her postdoctoral work has been in Anthropology at Princeton University.

Andreas Roepstorff is Director of the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies and a Professor at the Department of Anthropology at Aarhus University. His research spans anthropology, cognitive science, and neuroscience, with a particular focus on human cognition, culture, and social interaction. His work combines interdisciplinary approaches across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. As Director of AIAS, he works to strengthen international and interdisciplinary research collaboration and develop research talent. His work is widely recognized for bridging scientific disciplines and fostering innovative research environments.

Anna Coli - currently postdoctoral researcher at the IEAT Darcy Ribeiro Chair, based at the Institute for Advanced Transdisciplinary Studies (IEAT/UFMG). She coordinates the research group REDD (Network for Studies on Democracy and Disinformation) and works on philosophy and digital culture. She holds a PhD (cotutelle) from the University of Wuppertal (Germany) and Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic).
