WMG academics and Warwick alumnae have launched a pioneering skills development programme to help Pakistan’s graduates become career-ready. Working in collaboration with fellow Warwick alumna Dr Naima Quereshi (University of Education, Lahore), Dr Freeha Azmat, Associate Professor (Reader) in Engineering Education, and Dr Asima Iqbal, Assistant Professor and International Academic Integrity Lead, have created an initiative aimed at reducing the country’s skills gap by equipping young people with in-demand professional competencies.

UK will be sitting on a ‘goldmine’ of rare magnets from recycling old wind turbines

Recycling the UK’s offshore wind turbines when they are decommissioned could produce enough magnets to build a million electric vehicles a year, according to a new report published today by the National Engineering Policy Centre (NEPC), led by the Royal Academy of Engineering.

The report presents research commissioned by Dr Stuart Bradley and Dr Russ Hall at Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), ��ӰƬ. It shows that the UK has a real opportunity to secure a sovereign capability in manufacturing by recycling neodymium, a critical material used in electric vehicles, aircraft systems and wind turbines.

Recycling a single large turbine at the end of its life is expected to recover enough neodymium to produce motors for 12,000 electric vehicles, according to the report.

Wayve, Nissan and Uber join forces with PAVE UK to support the responsible deployment of self-driving vehicles

PAVE UK will bring Wayve, Uber and Nissan together to collaborate on scientifically backed public engagement to ensure responsible future deployment of automated vehicles across the country. Wayve and Uber plan to deploy autonomous vehicles in London this year as part of an initial trial that will further public engagement and understanding of the technology.

Warwick among leading Russell Group universities for apprenticeships

Degree Apprenticeship programmes delivered by Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) at the ��ӰƬ have been recognised as among the strongest offered by any Russell Group university, according to newly released government data.

Figures released through the Government’s Explore Education Statistics service show that Warwick ranks among the top-performing Russell Group institutions for achievement rates in Higher and Degree Apprenticeships (Levels 6 and 7) during the 2024/25 academic year.

WMG highlights

Two courses offered by WMG ranked first in England:

The Level 7 Digital and Technology Solutions Specialist programme thrived with a 100% achievement, retention and pass rate.

The first cohort on the Product Design and Development Engineer Standard on the Level 6 Applied Professional Engineering programme succeeded with a 94% achievement rate.

WMG Student Projects celebrate success

Student Project teams at WMG, ��ӰƬ, have been celebrating a series of outstanding achievements across national and international competitions, alongside hosting impactful industry events that showcase the breadth of student talent at Warwick.

Warwick Cyber, a new initiative bringing together students from across the University to work on cyber security problems and projects, has delivered exceptional results across four major cyber competitions:

Finished in third place at the 9/12 Strategy Challenge in Washington DC, competing against more than 30 teams from the US and internationally.

Reached the semi-finals of the UK Cyber Leaders Challenge 2026 with two teams, winning multiple awards including Best Briefing Note, Best Name and Emblem, and Best Teamwork.

Secured 1^st, 2^nd and 4^th place with three teams out of 28 universities at Sheffield Siege 2026.

Achieved a top-three finish at the pwnEd 7 Finals in Edinburgh.

WMG wins funding to apply acoustics to engineering innovation

Dr Hasina Rahman, Research Fellow at Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), ��ӰƬ, has been awarded funding by the Noise Network Plus to apply her innovative, unconventional approach of acoustics to materials engineering.

Dr Rahman, who is based in WMG’s Advanced Materials Manufacturing Centre (AMMC), has a strong background in acoustics, combined with expertise in chemistry and materials science, enabling her to collaborate with leading industry partners such as Empa and Materiacustica to translate science into practical, high‑performance solutions.

Her latest project entitled AcouPore, has secured financial backing from the Noise Network Plus. Noise Network Plus aims to build unprecedented research capabilities to tackle the complex challenge of reducing noise and its impacts on people, the environment and the economy.

One of the most distinguished awards in science, the Beilby Medal and Prize is awarded annually to a scientist or engineer whose work has exceptional practical significance in chemical engineering, applied science, energy efficiency, or a related field.
