 d Yemen 鈥� marking the first time that participants took it upon themselv
 es to film\, narrativize\, and broadcast their efforts to overthrow oppr
 essive regimes in real time. This movie and Snowdon's book The People Ar
 e Not an Image (Verso\, 2020) treat the phone camera as an extension mor
 e of the arm than of the eye\, examining what happens when film becomes 
 a direct tool of revolutionary action.

DESCRIPTION:When Memories Come Alive: 'Vivid' Remembering in Early Modern
  Britain In cognitive science and psychology\, 'vivid' memory is a recog
 nised conceptual category\, associated with particular sensory and emoti
 onal qualities. Can this category be usefully adopted by historians? The
  study of early modern memory has flourished in recent years\, but schol
 ars have typically explored the collective and social dimensions of memo
 ry over and above the individual experience of remembering. However\, ea
 rly modern natural philosophers did theorise about how bodies and souls 
 cooperated to produce compelling mental images\, while theologians discu
 ssed how the Holy Spirit could make the naturally 'dead' memory operate 
 'lively and powerfully'. Life-writers\, meanwhile\, described their form
 ative experiences in ways that parallel both classical rhetorical models
  for lively narrative\, and modern-day psychological templates for vivid
  memory. An interdisciplinary analysis of early modern memory accounts m
 ay open up new avenues for debate\, and guide us towards a richer unders
 tanding of how memory was felt and understood.

 ent theory that can support good practice. From understanding your purpo
 se to tailoring for your audience\, we will explore the important questi
 ons to consider when designing and developing public engagement activity
  and the value of this to both individuals and the institution. We will 
 reflect on how this could be applied to your own research\, and discuss 
 the wider support available from the Warwick Institute of Engagement - w
 herever you are on your engagement journey. The workshop will be led by 
 Laura Harford\, the strategic lead for Resonate\, WIE鈥檚 public events pr
 ogramme. She has extensive experience in outreach and public engagement\
 , and works closely with students\, staff and community partners to crea
 te accessible and engaging projects. The workshop will run from 11-1 on 
 16th June\, and a buffet lunch will be provided after the session.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This paper explores the reconfiguration of diet\, a
 ppetite and digestion in seventeenth-century chemical medicine. Comparin
 g the writings of two self-styled physician-philosophers\, Jan Baptist V
 an Helmont (1580鈥�1644) and Everard Maynwaring (c. 1629鈥�1713)\, it consid
 ers how subtle differences in their accounts of 'human nature' translate
 d into practice: in Van Helmont鈥檚 case\, as a stout rejection of the val
 ue of dietetics\, and in Maynwaring鈥檚\, as an embrace of the same. Ultim
 ately\, I argue\, Maynwaring chose to modify elements of his Helmontian 
 anthropology rather than abandon his longstanding commitment to diet as 
 the cornerstone of good health.
