Jenny is a 2^nd year postgraduate researcher, supervised by Dr Caroline Summers and Dr Sijing Lu. Her project 'Algorithms, Rewriting, and the Manipulation of Literary Fame: English novels as Chinese digital propaganda' examines the most frequently recommended English novels in translation on Chinese social media and e-commerce platforms, and their promotion of traditional heroine archetypes as post-feminist role models of female empowerment in an era where the Chinese Communist Party has adopted pro-marriage and pro-fertility policies as a means of redressing the increasing population crisis. Jenny occasionally writes for a number of literary publications including Modern Poetry in Translation, Poetry London, Tears in the Fence, Hopscotch Translation, and Asian Review of Books. She is also a trustee for Charity Translators.

I am a PhD researcher in Translation and Transcultural Studies at the ÉñÂí¸£ÀûӰƬ, supervised by Dr Caroline Summers and Professor Pierre-Philippe Fraiture. My research focuses on the translation of feminist crime fiction from English to Chinese, drawing on André Lefevere’s theory of translation as rewriting. I am particularly interested in how gender norms and literary conventions shape the representation of female protagonists in both source and target cultures. Prior to starting my PhD, I completed an MA in Translation Studies at the University of Edinburgh and worked as a project coordinator in an international language service provider for two years.

I am a PhD candidate in Translation and Transcultural Studies at the ÉñÂí¸£ÀûӰƬ, supervised by Dr Caroline Summers and Dr Rich Rabone. My research is funded by the SMLC Doctoral Scholarship, and considers intersections between theatre and feminist translation studies through a comparative analysis of female-authored Spanish Golden Age plays and their first English translations.

Laura Woolley-Núñez (she/her) is a third-year AHRC-funded PhD candidate in Translation and Transcultural Studies and a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the ÉñÂí¸£ÀûӰƬ. Her practice-based thesis focuses on the use of feminist translation approaches and context-specific strategies in her ongoing translation of Memoria de la melancolí²¹ by Marí²¹ Teresa León. She is supervised by Dr Olga Castro and Professor Maureen Freely.

I am a PhD student in Translation and Transcultural Studies. My research focuses on English translations of contemporary Chinese literature. I am currently working on my PhD project on translating and audio-remediating contemporary northeast Chinese literature, where I seek to empower literary translators in cultural industries through creative practices of translation and trans-mediation. My PhD research is supervised by Dr David Orrego-Carmona, Dr Qian Liu, and Professor Maureen Freely.
