TIA Centre Spotlight: Adam Shephard
My career journey
I’m not a computer scientist by training, I actually completed my undergraduate/Master’s degree in Natural Sciences at the University of Nottingham, specialising in Maths and Physics. Nottingham is famously the home of MRI, and being in that environment sparked my early interest in medical imaging/physics. After speaking with researchers working in MRI and MEG, I was then intent on pursuing a PhD in neuroimaging. This led me to Aston University, where I completed my PhD in the Psychology Department. My research focused on developing deep learning methods to segment brain lesions in paediatric MRI scans and predict long-term neuropsychological outcomes. My PhD gave me a really broad exposure to both academia and medical imaging. A particular highlight was being part of a prospective study, where I was directly involved in patient recruitment and scanning, something I loved doing.
Following my PhD, I joined the TIA Centre as a postdoctoral researcher working on the ANTICIPATE project, with Prof Nasir Rajpoot as my supervisor, and in collaboration with Dr Hanya Mahmood and Prof Ali Khurram (University of Sheffield). The TIA Centre’s reputation and the quality of its research made it an easy decision. I saw it as an opportunity to both deepen my AI/ML expertise and transition into a rapidly growing field in computational pathology. I spent five years as a postdoc before transitioning to an Assistant Professor last year.
There have been many highlights over that time. First and foremost are the people. The TIA Centre has built a genuinely collaborative and supportive culture that makes it a great place to work. Beyond that, I’ve been fortunate to travel to and present at conferences around the world (including beautiful locations like Florence). One thing I’m particularly proud of is running the TIA Centre Seminar Series over the past 4-5 years, where we’ve hosted over 80 guest speakers from 15+ countries (from 5 continents). It’s been a fantastic platform for building international connections and showcasing the Centre’s work. I regularly meet people at conferences who tell me they follow the series. Other highlights include winning the MIDOG (2021/22), TIGER 2022, and CHIMERA 2025 challenges, as well as receiving the Warwick Faculty Postdoc of the Year award in 2025.
My current work
I lead research on multimodal and agentic AI systems for cancer prognostication, with a particular focus on clinically driven computational pathology. My work centres on developing methods that combine different data modalities, such as histopathology, clinical records, and increasingly radiology, to improve prediction of disease progression and patient outcomes. A key part of this has involved work on oral epithelial dysplasia, where we aim to identify new biomarkers and better stratify patients at risk of malignant transformation. I’ve also worked on exploring similar challenges in laryngeal dysplasia, alongside broader interests in breast cancer and ductal carcinoma in situ. Ultimately, my goal is to develop AI systems that are not only accurate, but interpretable, clinically useful, and capable of supporting real-world decision-making.
My hobbies and interests
I enjoy a range of hobbies, including hiking in the Lake District, climbing and bouldering (with friends at TIA) and homebrewing (often with mixed results). My main passions are reading (crime mostly), gardening, cooking and running. I’m a regular at parkrun on Saturday mornings with family and friends, and very rarely miss one, currently sitting at 164 runs and counting. One perk of the job (and the conference travel that comes with it) is the opportunity to tick off international parkruns, including Graz this year. I’m also a big fan of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars (a slightly stereotypical trait, perhaps, for a computer scientist).
