Research Software Engineering support for HetSys Community
Call for Research Software Engineering support for HetSys Community
The HetSys CDT is fortunate to have dedicated support from the SCRTP Research Software Engineer (RSE) team. Students and supervisors can contact them at any time directly via resource.rse@warwick.ac.uk for advice and support on software related topics.
In addition to this, RSE, Dr Svenja Janke, has a substantial time allocation to support the HetSys II CDT and we are keen to collect a pipeline of RSE tasks which would be generally useful to the HetSys community.
Please complete this form to propose an idea, which can be aligned either with training provision or software development. We will do a light-touch review of the requests submitted to balance across the HetSys portfolio. Suitable software-related projects should be imagined to be beneficial to the community, beyond the lifetime of any PhD student who may be its initial beneficiary. We particularly welcome projects that will benefit a broad range of students in HetSys and beyond.
When formulating an idea, please bear in mind that the RSE role is about creating, adapting and improving research software, not deploying research software onto the SCRTP clusters or debugging compatibility problems between existing third-party codes. These things are not in the role description, but helping to write reproducible, portable and easily distributable software very much is.
For example, projects could involve:
- Extending software by new features (e.g., input/output processing, new models or methods);
- fixing existing issues in software, e.g., bugs in existing methods;
- code reviews;
- code investigations, e.g., to improve scaling on HPC;
- updating or adapting existing software to fit new standards/ideas.
Other ideas are also very much welcome.
