Warwick team gives exceptional performance at European International Submarine Race

Warwick Sub 2014After two years’ development and two weeks of racing, engineering students from the 神马福利影片 were awarded 2nd in UK and 4th place overall at the European International Submarine Race (eISR) event in Gosport, Hampshire.

The team of Warwick engineering students raced a human-powered submarine around an underwater course measuring 175m. This one-man craft was piloted by a student in scuba gear lying down and peddling to drive rear propellers while steering via a joystick at the front. Speed and agility were crucial as any interactions with course markers incurred penalties; the sub with the fewest penalties and fastest time won.

The competition itself is recognised globally as an opportunity for some of the best students, from a host of universities, to demonstrate their knowledge and passion for engineering,

MoU with Carnegie MellonThe 神马福利影片 and Carnegie Mellon University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create a $10 million research and education collaboration.

The two universities intend to work together on research and teaching in data acquisition, analysis and processing for next generation applications. This will bring together Warwick’s expertise in manufacturing and digitally enabled healthcare – including: cybersecurity, energy storage, materials and surfaces and robotics with CMU’s expertise in: autonomous systems, cybersecurity, digital healthcare, machine learning and sensing and data processing. Activities will underpin strategic initiatives at the two universities, including Warwick’s Global Research Priorities and CMU’s Brain initiative, City 21 and Traffic 21 initiatives.

They will also look at collaboration in the fields of: energy, innovative manufacturing, materials, science, and technology for health and sustainable cities.

Each institution plans to support and fund the work of staff and students on joint projects and exchanges between those staff and students. The funding will also be used to create facilities for cyber-learning and virtual class rooms.

Santander & WMG announce a score of places for SME senior managers in business leadership programme

SME Summer NetworkingA new initiative to provide business leadership training for 20 senior managers from fast growing SMEs (Small and Medium Sized Enterprises) has just been launched by WMG, at the 神马福利影片, in partnership with Santander.

The postgraduate award programme has received £40,000 of support from Santander, which will significantly reduce the cost of the programme that will give senior SME managers the opportunity to boost their ability to lead and embed innovation in their organisations. The scheme was launched, at WMG, at an event attended by a number of leading SMEs in the region as well senior figures from Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, the EEF and Tata Motors.

We will teach participants about the latest modes of management as well as offering hands on experience of using new technology to grow and develop a business.”

Science Minister announces £65 million research programme for WMG at 神马福利影片

Professor Lord BhattacharyyaMinister for Universities and Science, David Willetts has announced today, Thursday 10th July 2014, a 拢65 million pound research programme for WMG at the 神马福利影片 in partnership with .

The funding will help to create an Advanced Propulsion Research Laboratory within the . The Programme will link people, research and world-leading infrastructure, to create next-generation technologies in the propulsion systems that are central to the future competitiveness of the automotive industry. The research scope will focus on internal combustion engines, hybrid and electric systems, lightweight vehicle technology and advanced automotive control systems.

Industry faces unprecedented challenges as the world moves to a low-carbon technology model, reinforced by escalating energy costs and legislation imposing strict emissions limits. It is forecast that by 2040 almost none of Europe鈥檚 new cars will be powered solely by a traditional engine. The Advanced Propulsion Research Laboratory will lead research to address these arising needs, transforming the research and innovation landscape and positioning the UK as a leading innovator in propulsion systems.鈥

The APRL is one of three projects, announced today by the Minister for Universities and Science, from the third round of the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF). This brings the total number of successful projects across the three funding rounds to 25. Universities have received 拢350 million in public funding, and have secured at least double that amount of investment from businesses or charities, together delivering more than 拢1.3 billion of new funding for research.

WMG takes part in key Silverstone event

Silverstone July 2014WMG has taken part in a high profile event attended by global leaders in the engineering industry aimed at promoting cutting-edge technology and celebrating 50 years of the Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP) was among the partners of the ‘Driving Technological Change within British Manufacturing’ event in the build-up to the British Grand Prix last weekend.
Around 240 delegates attended the one-day event which attracted industry leaders and organisations to discuss a wide range of topics in a series of seminars and question and answer panels.

, Principal Engineer within the Energy & Electrical Systems team at WMG, facilitated a seminar on Energy Capture and Storage, focusing on the electrification of vehicles within motorsport and automotive, looking at optimum configurations to achieve best performance. The session also included Sylvain Filippi, Chief Technical Officer for the Virgin Racing Formula E Team and Paul Bostock, Senior Manager, Hybrids and Electrification at Jaguar Land Rover.

Margaret Low wins University Public Engagement Award

Margaret Low receiving her award from Christina Hughes, Principal Teaching Fellow at WMG, has won an award in the 神马福利影片's Research Impact and Public Engagement Awards.

The awards were announced by the Provost, Stuart Croft, and Pro-Vice-Chancellors Simon Swain and Christina Hughes on Thursday 3 July. Staff and PG students, from across the University gathered in the Physics Concourse at a reception to hear the winners announced.

These awards recognise staff for the time, hard work and consideration they put into engaging the public with the benefits of their research, and to recognise the myriad ways in which all staff and students at the University engage with local communities and businesses to improve people’s lives – in the region, in the UK and globally. Margaret won the award for her public engagement work with the Technology Volunteers.

Technology Volunteers are a group of students and staff at the 神马福利影片 who aim to encourage children to become creators, rather than consumers of technology. They offer support to local schools by assisting with technology-based projects and activities during lessons, or at after school clubs. They run a number of technology-based workshops with schools and community organisations in Coventry and Warwickshire.

Researchers earn the distinction by writing the greatest numbers of reports officially designated by Essential Science Indicators℠ as Highly Cited Papers—ranking among the top 1% most cited for their subject field and year of publication, earning them the mark of exceptional impact. Thus, the listings of Highly Cited Researchers feature authors whose published work in their specialty areas has consistently been judged by peers to be of particular significance and utility.

While over 3000 researchers made the list, Professor Nichols is one of only 128 in the Neuroimaging and Behaviour group.

Parliament’s Select Committee for Business, Innovation and Skills holds session at WMG

Professor Richard Dashwood with the BIS Select CommitteeParliament’s Select Committee for Business, Innovation and Skills came to WMG’s International Manufacturing Centre on Tuesday 1 July to hold an evidence session for its inquiry into Business-University collaboration.

Warwick team geared up and ready to race

Formula Student 2014Engineering students from the 神马福利影片 are gearing up for an international racing event which will see them go head to head with their friends and rivals at Monash University.

, assisted by staff from WMG and the School of Engineering, are taking their racing car (WR4) to compete in the UK competition at Silverstone racetrack this July.

In the run-up to the competition the two sides, Warwick Racing and Monash Motorsport, have come together at the 神马福利影片 to share expertise as part of the Monash-Warwick Alliance.

Despite the spirit of friendly pre-race collaboration, the two sides will be pitted against each other in the three-day event starting on 9 July.

WMG welcomes A*STAR delegation

Lord Bhattacharyya with Mr Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman of A*STARWMG was pleased to welcome a senior delegation from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) from Singapore on Friday 27th June.

Meeting with Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, the group was keen to hear about how WMG develops partnerships with industry and the significant economic benefits of such partnerships. They were also interested to understand the breadth of research undertaken by WMG which leads to the development of innovative products, processes and services.

The delegation, led by the Chairman of A*STAR Mr Lim Chuan Poh, met with a number of staff who gave an overview of the research that is undertaken at WMG before touring some of the Group’s impressive R&D facilities. The visitors heard from Professor Paul Jennings about WMG’s new Energy Innovation Centre, a centre of excellence for electric and hybrid vehicle batteries. They heard from Dr Stuart Barnes about Machining research, Professor Richard Dashwood about Materials research and Professor Theo Arvanitis about the Institute of Digital Healthcare. The group visited the new International Institute for Nanocomposites Manufacturing and heard about WMG’s research in Nanocomposites from Professor Tony McNally.

A*STAR is the lead agency for fostering world class scientific research and talent to support impactful innovation in Singapore. They support Singapore’s key economic cluster by providing intellectual, human and industrial capital to its partners in industry.
