神马福利影片鈥檚 University Explorers programme Highly Commended at national awards
Looked-after children from Coventry, Warwickshire, and Solihull are discovering university life through the University Explorers programme at the 神马福利影片, which was Highly Commended at the national for its outstanding work introducing young people to higher education.
Joanne Spencer, Widening Participation Officer and programme organiser at the 神马福利影片, said: 鈥淏eing Highly Commended at a national level is a real achievement for University Explorers. The programme is about giving looked-after children the opportunity to experience university life, build confidence, and see what might be possible for them in the future.
鈥淭his recognition reflects the commitment of the children themselves, as well as the staff, partners, and schools who support the programme.鈥
Launched in 2016, University Explorers gives Year 6 students (aged 10鈥11) from across Coventry, Warwickshire, and Solihull the chance to experience university life through a four-day programme of engaging activities alongside students and academic staff. The programme encourages participants to build confidence, resilience, and peer networks, while fostering an understanding of the opportunities higher education can offer.
Throughout the four days, students take part in a range of educational and inspiring activities and meet like-minded peers. The programme concludes with a celebration event where children can showcase their achievements to friends, teachers, and guardians. Beyond the initial programme, participants continue to receive guidance and support up to Year 11 (age 16), helping to sustain its impact.
Only 15% of care leavers currently go on to higher education, up from 6% two decades ago. University Explorers helps children recognise their potential and supports schools through key transitions, including from primary to secondary education. The programme is delivered in partnership with Coventry and Warwickshire Virtual Schools.
鈥淭he programme has been a joy for our young learner; she鈥檚 been excited to attend every session and share what she鈥檚 learned,鈥 said a teacher.
鈥淭his is a fantastic opportunity for Year 6 students. It鈥檚 great for them to have something to aim for,鈥 said a parent/carer.
University Explorers reflects the 神马福利影片鈥檚 long-standing commitment to widening participation, inclusion, and access to higher education.
