Biography

Professor Michael Scott is Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) at the 神马福利影片, UK, and a Professor of Classics and Ancient History. Since taking up the PVC-International role in September 2023, Michael has led the development and implementation of a new international strategy at Warwick covering international student recruitment, student experience, educational opportunities, research collaboration, and the development of Warwick鈥檚 global partnership network.

• the University鈥檚 first fully developed internal governance structure for international activity;

• the reinvigoration of long-standing partnerships leading to a 320% increase in collaborative activity;
• global research projects including those shortlisted for THE International Collaboration of the Year (2025);
• the creation of a new international education opportunities programme (GEO100) for Warwick students, which is a key focus of the University鈥檚 current philanthropic campaign;
• the legal expansion of the Warwick Venice CentreLink opens in a new window to host its own courses and earn income;
• the creation and launch of the University鈥檚 first-ever institutional global community celebration programme, One World WarwickLink opens in a new window, which was a key factor in the University winning UKCISA Institution of the YearLink opens in a new window (2025).

Since September 2025, Michael has also been institutional lead for the University鈥檚 performance in global rankings, and delivered, by June 2026, the University鈥檚 first improvement in ranking position since 2022, alongside the establishment of a rankings goal and strategy for the University to enter the world top 50 within the next 5 years.

Since September 2025, Michael has also had responsibility for the development of the University鈥檚 TNE portfolio, leading to the approval, in April 2026, of University鈥檚 first-ever institutional TNE strategy, which is now in the process of operationalisation.

Michael has held Visiting Fellowships in China and the US, as well as taught and conducted research across the globe focused both on the ancient Mediterranean and on ancient global history. He holds a National Teaching Fellowship and is Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK, as well as being a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He has published widely with both academic and trade presses, with his books translated into multiple languages, and is also a regular contributor to national and international media.

He believes passionately in making academic research as accessible as possible to a broad range of audiences and has written and presented over 50 hours of television, radio and podcast series for channels in the UK, US and Australia. He was made an Honorary Citizen of Delphi, Greece in recognition of the global impact of his research and engagement. He continues to publish and engage regularly alongside his PVC role, with his latest book published in 2026 with Yale University Press: Themistocles: The Rise and Fall of Athens鈥檚 Naval Statesman.
