Your first mentoring meeting with your trainee will set the tone for all subsequent mentor meetings so it is essential to consider the following, all of which support the development of an open and honest mentoring relationship.

1. 1. Preparation - The first thing to consider is how you will move between being a teacher to being a mentor. Although there is some overlap between the attributes of a teacher and that of a mentor, there are also significant differences which mean that you will need to make a conscious shift into your mentor role. Consider how will you prepare to mentor.
   2. Environment - Where will you meet? Finding an environment in which you both feel comfortable and able to speak openly and free from potential external interruptions is essential.
   3. Conversation - What will you talk about in your first meeting? Perhaps, you will start by sharing some of your teaching autobiography (helping the trainee to feel more comfortable). Also, finding out about your trainee鈥檚 previous teaching experiences and their personal aspirations for their teaching career will demonstrate your interest in their long-term development.
   4. Orientation - How will you plan to orientate your trainee to the school, their working environment, the teaching staff, the support teams, the school policies and procedures, their timetable etc.
   5. Timings - How long will your meetings last? The DfE鈥檚 minimum expectation is that mentor meetings will be for one hour per week. How can you ensure that this happens?
   6. Expectations - It is important to also make time to discuss your expectations of the relationship. One way of doing this is by drawing up a mentoring agreement. The mentoring agreement can take many forms, but as a minimum it should set out the agreed expectations for both mentor and trainee, the joint and separate commitments of both the mentor and trainee, communication processes and to identify the boundaries.
